Potato Sack Pose | Seattle Newborn Photographer

The potato sack pose is one that has become extremely popular in the world of newborn photography.  I try to do it during every session but some clients aren’t as interested in getting that shot as they are in some of the others.  When this little man came to see me for his newborn session, he was just a few days old and had the most gorgeous head of hair!  I couldn’t have asked for a more cooperative little model.  He was sound asleep for nearly all of his session and he even flashed a few smiles.  His mom and dad had to travel quite a ways to come see me so I was thrilled that we were able to get some amazing photos for them.  From the froggy pose, to the potato sack pose and all the others in between, little Jameson totally rocked  his newborn session!  I had a hard time choosing my favorites but here they are.

And if you’re a newborn photographer and would like to see a behind the scenes series of how to achieve the potato sack pose, click here.

I tend to fall a little behind on blogging.  Please consider following my Facebook page for current work and behind the scenes posts.

10 month baby boy | Seattle outdoor beach session

This 10 month baby boy is a special little man indeed.  He was born a few months premature and spent quite a bit of time in the NICU before receiving the green light to go home.  When I met him for the first time, it was for his sitting up milestone session.  Most babies are sitting pretty well without support around 7 months of age.  Little Max took a bit longer to reach that milestone, so we waited a little longer to have his session.  The great part was that the weather outside was amazing!  Summer had just wrapped up and we still had a handful of gorgeous sunsets going into the fall season.  I planned his session for the beach so we could capture a few of him on the horizon with the sun setting behind him.  Max’s momma did a great job styling her family for the session, too! Their outfits and the colors were perfect for the setting.  Technically, the session was a mini-session, but we ended up overshooting a bit and I even had a tough time deciding on my faves!  Sharing a few here … sorry they’re so late!  (This session was actually photographed back in October, believe it or not!)

Maple Valley Family | Eastside Photographer

This Maple Valley Family met me for their outdoor session toward the end of summer / beginning of fall.  For months, we had gorgeous sunny weather and then suddenly, it rained.  And it rained.   And it kept on like that for several days.  We even had to reschedule their session once due to the crummy weather.  But the day we had their session, the weather truly couldn’t have been more amazing.  The sky cleared up and the sun shone brightly.  On those clear sky days, I always look strive for that golden hour and plan my sessions for just before sunset.  This family photo session was no exception. Here are a few of my favorites from the evening.

One Year Session | Issaquah baby photographer

As any baby photographer can tell you, a one year session is almost as much work as a newborn session. But what makes them so great, is that they are so much fun!  One of the best parts is that they’re so excited to be in the studio.  They are usually very curious about their new surroundings and ready to explore.  If they’re walking and moving around pretty actively, it can be tough to get them to hold still for the camera!  As any of the moms from my one year sessions will tell you, they get quite the workout trying to keep their toddlers in one place!

This sweetheart came back in to see me for her one year session a few months ago.  I was lucky enough to have met her and her big sister when they came in for her newborn session.  These girls are so darn gorgeous!  I had a great time posing them together once again for little Joslyn’s one year session. And Joslyn was just the perfect little model, too.  Lots and lots of giggles, smiles and laughter.  Made my job a piece of cake 🙂  Here are a few of my personal favorites for her one year session.  Enjoy!

Star Wars Theme Baby | Issaquah Newborn Photographer

When mom told me that dad was a major Star Wars fan, I knew I had to incorporate a Star Wars theme into their newborn session.  I immediately began searching for the perfect little outfits and started collecting figurines to use for the session as well.  I had to be clever in keeping them from my own kids because I knew if they saw them, they would never give them back to me!  As I started my search for the perfect set-up, the ideas started flowing.  When mom and dad walked in for their session and saw the Star Wars props laid out, they got pretty excited.  It’s an amazing feeling to be able to provide these special memories for parents.  Part of the process when scheduling a newborn session with Dawn Potter Photography is filling out a pre-session questionnaire.  This questionnaire is extremely helpful for me when planning a session.  It helps me to visualize the parents’ goals for the session and get an idea of their style and taste.  Knowing this ahead of time allows me to deliver a gallery of images to mom and dad that they truly love and are proud to display in their home.  Because I also did a maternity session for Hunter’s parents before he was born, we also discussed goals for the maternity session for the very same reason.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from little Hunter’s Star Wars themed newborn session. And trust me, these were hard to narrow down!
